The New York Wedding Band Sink Hole
I came across this post today and it is appauling.
"we met with the booking agent for .... Orchestras in their lovely Upper West Side offices.
the schtick is that all the bands are led by female bandleaders. cute, no?
although the two principals of the (-named group-) were booked for our date (at their going rate of about $28K per wedding), there were two orchestras still available: (just under $20K).
both singers were very talented in their genre, but we felt that when confronted with hip-hop or rock, their interpretations left something to be desired. for some reason all the Starlight bands evoked the Sweeney Sisters from Saturday Night Live"

I dont discredit anyone for making the money, but this is robbery with a smile and this is a warning to brides and grooms that this is foolery. Regardless of your income and status, this is still unnecessary- the quality is out there. I implore you to shop and don't be sold on what looks glossy, cheesy and quite frankly theft. I am not saying they are not good, they are not $28,000 good for 4 hours. I am also not certain what is considered an orchestra - as a classical and pop musician, an orchestra is NOT a 9 piece band with a Saxophone. There is some serious inflation and attempts at justifying these costs as well which furthers my justification for writing this. We do all the prep, rehearsals, chart writing, send music to players, professional sound, coordinate with client and venue, emcee, itinerary etc.., - Cost is about $850 per wedding and built into the total fee. Great lighting should not run more than $1500-$2000 for an average sized room. Lighting is optional depending on venue and your budget of course. In fact, my group can blow the roof off at a third of what is charged here and personalized service to boot as we are:
